The Christmas period has arrived and this is traditionally the time when companies look back on the past year and also look at trends and developments for the new year. In this article we look back at the past 5 years and investigate our customers' preferences in the field of wooden floor colors and installation patterns .

In 2018, Uipkes conducted a study into regional floor preferences , based on 1,300 deliveries, quotation requests, customer conversations and online visitor data. The popularity of wood species , installation patterns and colors was examined.

Based on these research results from 2018, Uipkes has focused on oak floors, mainly in the form of lamella parquet. This is due to the great popularity of this wood type among showroom visitors and the possibility to use these wooden floors with underfloor heating. Other wood species are still available, but have a longer delivery time.

22 colors have also been replaced by new colors. The 90 unique colors that Uipkes offers are divided into 9 Color Groups since 2019, each consisting of 10 colors. These Color Groups are, from light to dark colors:

Research regional flooring preferences 2019-2023

In this research article, Uipkes provides insight into the popularity of the Color Groups and Installation patterns per province in the period 2019 to the first 9 months of 2023. In addition, we examined whether trends are visible over the years. The question is whether certain Color Groups and/or Installation patterns have become more or less popular over the years 2019-2023.

Comments and comments on floor preferences 2019-2023

The research data is based on more than 5,000 consultations in the showroom or via video calls. The video conversations largely took place during the Corona period in 2020 and 2021.

The data for the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe and Zeeland are not representative due to the low number of advisory conversations (N < 50), but are for the sake of completeness. has been added to the overview.

The reason for this is that the willingness of showroom visitors to travel more than 100 km to a Uipkes showroom in Amsterdam or Alphen aan den Rijn is small and the associated marketing activities are also less than in the other provinces.

A large part of the installation patterns have been ignored in the annual analyzes. Uipkes has only expanded the number of installation patterns since the end of 2022 from 4 to 18 different leg patterns and the numbers are too low to conduct research into this. The 4 main patterns are:

The other 14 installation patterns are derivatives of wooden floors, herringbone floors or chevron floors.

A Versailles floor is a beautiful wooden floor that requires a lot of manual work to install and is rarely selected by showroom visitors due to the high installation costs. For this reason, the Versailles floor has been excluded from the annual analyses.

Finally, when interpreting the research results, it must be taken into account that the data is based on (a large number of) consultations with one company (Uipkes Wood Flooring) with a unique set of colors. However, private individuals, project developers and interior architects can extract trends from this data and incorporate them into their interior design choices.

Overview of floor preferences 2019-2023

Below are the most important insights into the field of Color Groups and Installation patterns in the period 2019-2023.

1.1 Color group percentages in the Netherlands

    Preferences for wooden floor colors in the Netherlands

    With an equal distribution of the Color Groups, each Color Group has a share of 11.1% (black horizontal line). From the bar chart it can be seen that the Color Groups are White (26.6%), Light Oak (23.9%). , Natural (19.7%) and Grey (12.5%) are the most popular color groups for wooden floors in the Netherlands.

    Based on these results, it can be concluded that light colors are preferred by more than 70% for finishing wooden floors in the Netherlands in the period 2019-2023.

1.2 Installation pattern percentages in the Netherlands

    Preferences for installation patterns in the Netherlands

    The classic wooden floor pattern (60.6%) is by far the most popular installation pattern in the Netherlands, followed by the herringbone floor (31.6%). The chevron floor (7.5%) and the Versailles floor (0.3%) are the least popular installation patterns .

    A large part of the difference in popularity can be explained by the difference in installation costs. Versailles floors and chevron floors have the highest installation costs per m2, because each (small) floor section must be processed by the parquet installer .

    As a result, these installation patterns often fall outside the planned budget of wooden floor buyers.

1.3 Color group percentages per installation pattern in the Netherlands

    The color choices for the different installation patterns vary considerably:

    • It is striking that chevron floors, compared to the other installation patterns , are mainly finished in Gray tones (20.7%) and Black colors (14.6%).
    • For the wooden floor pattern, showroom visitors mainly choose light colors with a preference for colors that are close to the natural wood color, such as Light Oak (27.6%), followed by the color groups White (25.6%) and Natural (21%).
    • Versailles floors are mainly chosen in brown tones and dark colors compared to the other installation patterns . In addition, the Versailles floor is the only installation pattern that is regularly finished in a national color (9.1%).
    • Herringbone floors are predominantly finished in light colors and shades of gray (16.5%). Herringbone floors in White colors (29%) are highly preferred by our customers.

    As indicated, the numbers of visitors from Drenthe are not representative of this study (N < 50). The colors that visitors from Drenthe choose are mainly natural wood colors such as Light Oak (42.9%) and Oak (28.6%).

    The (few) visitors from Drenthe were mainly interested in the wooden floor pattern (57.1%) and herringbone pattern (42.9%).

    Showroom visitors from Flevoland have a preference for light colours, with the color group Light Oak (26.9%) being by far the most popular. Flevoland is also the province in which national colors are most often chosen (2.6%).

    The preference for installation patterns of customers from Flevoland follow the national averages, with the classic wooden floor pattern (65.8%) being by far the most popular.

    Of all provinces, showroom visitors from Friesland prefer the White colors the most in 42.9% of the cases. The Black colors (6.4%) are also above the national average and (Gold) Brown colors are hardly chosen. Natural colors are chosen less often (7.1%) and therefore deviate significantly from the national average (19.1%).

    Visitors from Gelderland have a preference for light colors and follow the color preferences of the national averages.

    Herringbone floors (41.7%) are the most popular in Gelderland compared to all other provinces. This also makes the choice for Plank Wooden Floors (51.1%) the lowest of all provinces.

    The few visitors from Groningen who we received in our showrooms were mainly interested in Light Oak colors. These results are not representative of the color preferences in Groningen.

    All visitors from Groningen were interested in the traditional plank wooden floors pattern. The low number of visitors means that this data is not representative of the installation pattern choices of people from Groningen.

    Showroom visitors from Limburg have a strong preference for White (27.4%) and Natural (27.2%) colors and hardly any interest in (dark) brown colors. Grey (13.6%) and Black (9.1%), on the other hand, are relatively popular among Limburgers, compared to national averages (19.7%).

    The preference for colors among visitors from North Brabant is mainly White (32.2%) and Grey floors (16.1%) compared to national averages. The choice for Natural floors (12.7%) is much lower than the national average.

    It is striking that in North Brabant, showroom visitors most often choose the Versailles floor (0.9%) and chevron floor (11.0%) and less often the Planken wooden floor pattern compared to all other provinces.

    When it comes to colors, visitors from North Holland mainly follow national color trends. There is a slightly greater preference for (dark) brown colors compared to the national averages.

    Although the visitor numbers from Zeeland are low (N < 50) and not representative of the province, the few visitors do show a clear preference for White (30.8%), Light Oak (23.1%) and Grey colors (23.1%).

3. Colors and Installation patterns Trends for the years 2019-2023

Finally, we can look at the installation patterns and color groups on an annual basis. Are there any trends that can be observed over the years?

    Wooden floors trends for the years 2019-2023

    The choice of colors for the traditional wooden floor pattern has been relatively stable over the years. The most important differences are a decrease in the choice of Light Oak floor colors and an increase in the choice of Natural colors.

    Herringbone flooring trends for the years 2019-2023

    With herringbone floors we see a decrease in choice in Grey, Brown and Black colors over the years 2019-2022. In 2023 we will see a small revival in Grey colors again.

    We also see an increase in the choice of Natural colors and a slight growth in the choice of White colors for herringbone floors.

    With the chevron floors we see an increase in White, Natural and Black colors in the period 2019-2023.

    Oak, Gold Brown and Brown, Oak and Light Oak colors have proven to be a much less popular choice for finishing chevron floors over the years.

    Grey chevron floor colors were especially popular in the period 2019-2022, but appear to be a less popular choice in 2023, the year in which Natural and Black colors show a strong increase.

Conclusions

The color research shows a strong preference for wooden floors in light and earthy colors and this has only increased in the past 5 years. This especially applies to classic wooden floors and the herringbone pattern. It is therefore expected that by 2024, wooden floors in light colors will be widely chosen.

The chic chevron and Versailles installation patterns are also regularly installed in brown, grey or black colors. These installation patterns are especially popular in Overijssel and North Brabant.

Most provinces follow national flooring trends in terms of color and installation pattern . Visitors from a number of provinces, such as Gelderland, Overijssel and North Brabant, have preferences that deviate from the national averages in terms of color and/or installation pattern choice.
